Memo to Thom Jurek: Shut Up
Thom Jurek is a writer at allmusic, a site I visit at least once a day. I think I even visited it while on vacation in San Francisco last summer. Why? Why, because it's the best single resource for popular music on the web. It's a repository that actually aspires to catalog EVERY recording in the world. And it's still workin', mind you, but they've done great with what they've got. And most of them even have reviews!
Music reviews are a funny thing. You have to read them selectively, and to do that you have to read the writers selectively. Which means finding music critics that you respect.
I know. Hard to do. But some are harder than others.
So a few years back, when I took part in a reader survey that allmusic offered, one answer came quick. The question was, "What do you like the least about allmusic.com?" (They italicized least just like that. Cuz they'd already asked what you liked most.) The answer? "Thom Jurek."
This rambling jackass of a writer simply CANNOT shut up. His reviews of albums become track-by-track analyses; sometimes, they become very long-form essays. The first one I ever encountered was his review of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' best album, No More Shall We Part. (Yes, it's their best album. Fuck off.) When you click on the above link, notice two things: 1) how goddamn long the review is. 2) The fact that THAT'S NOT ALL OF IT. There's a READ MORE tab. Jesus, with what's already there, are you really gonna be interested in the sequel by the time you get to that tab? Read closer yet, and you will notice that 1) in the full review (an unbelievable 968 words), he mentions the album title exactly three times. 2) He mentions the previous album, The Boatman's Call, four times. Yes, we get it. No More Shall We Part has a lot in common with The Boatman's Call. Which album is it you're talking about again?
So I read that one and immediately decided that I hated this guy. That was before his review of The Rising, Bruce Springsteen's wonderful album—one of only two albums that dealt with 9/11 (and the only one to deal with it directly) in terms of honest human loss and vulnerability, rather than jingoism and bullshit melodrama. Jurek's review (1,225 words) opens with an epigram. An epigram! For a frigging Springsteen record! An epigram, no less, that consists of an Art Carney quote. The apparent goal of such a review is to give you artistic comparisons and detailed dissertation about the record...you know, to save you the trouble of LISTENING TO IT.
The bulk of his other reviews are confined to jazz. Ironically, a genre in which discipline and non-self-indulgence are extraordinarily important. Again, though, Thom Jurek can't shut up, and he has the rare gift of being blustery and effusive without generating any actual enthusiasm. In his writings on one of my favorite albums by one of my favorite musicians, Chappaqua Suite by Ornette Coleman, he manages to turn in by far the shortest review I've ever read, gives the album 4 1/2 stars, explains the innovative and creative processes behind the record, and ends with an effusive outburst of "Very worthwhile indeed." Oh, wow! Doesn't that inspire you to just get up and pay the $30.00 that it takes to buy this CD from Poland, the only place it's still in print?! Rejoice! Celebrate! Jump up and shout it from the rooftops! "Very worthwhile indeed."
Not to mention the shit he gets wrong. Another Ornette album (the first one, Something Else!!!! The Music of Ornette Coleman), according to Jurek, "shook up the jazz world" when it was released in 1958. Yeah. I'm sure that the 30 people who heard it in 1958 were thoroughly shaken up by that vaguely avant-garde album.
Thom, if you're reading this: I, too, have read Oscar Wilde's treatise on the critic as artist. And I understand the impulse to make art about other art; very postmodern. But you know what? Your art ain't worth much if nobody wants to read it. And it don't do much for its subject if, after all your rambling, you give noncommittal conclusions. So seriously, shut up already!
To sum up, Thom Jurek sucks.

Haa haa! :) It sounds like you got some things off your chest. I visit that site sometimes. I usually check it for the reviews or to just find an album. I've never really noticed the name of the reviewer. Maybe I should?
so... you have mixed feelings about this thom jurek guy, eh? i think you want to take your underwear off and give it to him. you are soooo attracted to the man. it's like you're in kindergarten or something! just go up to him, tell him that you find him attractive and see what happens. stop being such a pussy.
The impulse to make art about other art... see also: The TV Guide Channel.
Art Carney? I remember him from the Star Wars Holiday Special! (it featured Jefferson Starship).
Worst 2 hours of my life. And that includes my colonoscopy.
How's that for a succinct, conclusive review?
never ever tell anyone that you've had something up your butt. never. unless you want them to stick something else up there. "you sure?" "Yeah, goddammit! it wouldn't be the first time! now get to it! shit..."
words to live by.
You see, Jesse...
This is just where you and I differ.
Music reviews are either objective, subjective, misinformed or bandwagon jumping...about 90% of them are the latter three.
A couple years ago, allmusic.com started making a concious effort to provide longer, more in depth reviews. I don't think Thom is the only one on staff writing essays for reviews.
Dear "j",
Fess up, Jurek. I know it's you.
Actually it's not me; but I am thrilled to death to be the object of so much latent hostility. It makes my day that there is always a fan out there wishing me well!
I arrived at this site as it was the first hit for Thom Jurek on Google, and the "shut up" echoed my reasoning for looking him up. I had just read a review where the man got the name of the album wrong - twice. Yes, I disagree with his assement of the album in question, and yes, it's all obviously subjective. But if this jackass is a professional reviewer and can't even get the name of the album right, how much confidence would you place in _anything_ he says? Check it out...
http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:5etqoaraqijv - I love the album, BTW, although it took more than a few listens - a nice departure for a band that already mixes it up -
Knew this guy 15-17 years ago- he wouldn't shut up then- even in person- everyone's life story became his own- naturally we called him Thom Jerk- he wormed his way to the top by padding quite a bit- we thought he was a dangerous pathological liar- truth is he was a little shy- not so handsome and in the company of many 'chick magnets'- was always there for his friends- blindly loyal- quite a scammer trading handbill copies at the copy shop where he worked to the local pizza joint for unlimited chow to feed his broke musician friends- just trying to get by like the rest of us I suppose- speaking a million miles a minute- a blurr of words can be a handy disguise.

oh yes, his reviews are too long~
but,ur words are long too~~
so, u are a biiiiitch too?
uh, maybe~
too, too, too- even a few words can be too... many.
I just did a search on Thom Jerkoff to see if other people think he's a total wanker too. Glad i found your essay.
What an IDIOT he is. Blathering on and on like a high school prat who's discoverd the TRUTH, like how cool Che Guevera was or how the Jews really run the world.
ugh!
Bet you didn't know that an anagram of Thom Jurek is:
JERK MOUTH
I wonder why?? :)
I must say that "JERK MOUTH" is rather pathetic and immature. Kinda sad that a 17 year old girl thinks that about you, huh?
Totally agree..Thom is obviously a friustrated musician of some kind. He makes everything personal and he has a huge chip on his shoulder. Screw him. He's a sad a miserbale low life who should be ignored.
Thom Jurek is a fucking moron. I find it impossible to take anything he writes seriously. It's gotten to the point where anytime I see his name attached to an album review, I refuse to read it... not due to its length, but because I know it'll be nothing but name-dropping, holier-than-thou horseshit.
Don't worry too much about it, though. Just look at the photos of him on his AMG bio. The dude looks like L. Ron Hubbard's bastard son!
Similarly to many here, I came across this blog after Googling this guy after reading an inaccurate AMG review about the first Band of Horses album. I can't wait for his book of poetry, not to mention his "cultural and critical biography of Miles Davis."
I couldn't agree more...I am a record producer and he reviewed my last album...his assumptions were wrong and absurd. He presupposed his own conclusions and then critisized based on them. He should get a life~!
Nice rant. I was reading his review of Eddie Vedder's Into the Wild soundtrack while listening to said great disc. Wondering what Jurek is smoking, I wound up here.
zoombadabing reckons Thom Jurek should get a life. I reckon zoombadabing should get a dictionary and then he/she would know how to spell 'criticized'. I bet Jurek knows how to spell it.
If no one wants to read long essays about albums, they probably also don't want to read long essays about long essays about albums. Doofus.
Thom Jurek is an undeniably handsome man, and all the negative comments here are obviously the result of insane jealousy of his unparalleled writing skills. His genius cannot be contained within a mere paragraph; indeed, it’s a shame that he’s only allotted a few thousand words to convey the innumerable complexities of the record at hand, and exactly how it also relates to everyday life. He is not in the critic business for popularity, but rather for “The Art of It All.” You should all be so lucky to have a mind as brilliant and complex as mi…, er, Thom’s.
I came across Thom Jurek's album notes while perusing Halcyon Days, a prime example of California bullshit. As luck would have it, I had stumbled upon a prime example of California literary bullshit.
Your memo had me in stitches. But I don't have the stamina to read any of the reviews you cited.
"This is music that names and erases itself while simultaneously naming its other."
Can anyone possibly take this trash seriously?
As a lifelong journalist, writer and reviewer, my criticism is that Jurek can't write. He's showing off rather than communicating. He's writing about himself rather than the music.
Yesterday, I read Jurek's jizz-soaked review of a Karen Dalton album and nearly lost my lunch/dinner. Mentioned this to someone else, and he pointed me at this blog.
Read Jurek's review of Slayer's "Christ Illusion" and instantly found him to be bloody irritating. His style is terrible and he refers to not only Christianity, but Islam as well, as "myths." So these two religions are in the same category as the yeti and Paul Bunyan? I was pretty sure that these two religions were in actual existence, with mosques, some guy called the Pope and all kinds of history. After this disaster, I'll never even begin to read anything he spews. He deserves a sound caning and no supper. Boo.
It's great that Jurek can use his reviews to talk about himself or to "make art." But people go to allmusic.com to get information about music they may be interested in and if you read this guy's reviews you are likely to get information that is completely worthless and misleading.
This Thom Jurek REALLY doesn't seem to know what he's talking about according to almost everybody else who commented on this site. (This "Princepurple" guy is obviously a moron, btw.) His review of Miles Davis' "Dark Magus" is soooo aweful! This is a guy who doesn't understand the music, yet he writes about it!!! How the fuck is THAT possible!? And to top it off, he's supposed to write a "cultural and critical biography of Miles Davis", too???? Thom must've been jealous of Miles for coming up with all that music he couldn't understand...
I think you sir, are an idiot. I found this via a search for Thom Jurek, because I LOVE his reviews. He doesn't just do jazz reviews, you really need to know your shit before ranting. He does a lot of sludge, drone, doom, and metal reviews. Awesome, spectacular reviews that make me buy albums. His reviews for Sunn O))), Boris, Earth, and Om are some of the best I've ever read. He doesn't simply review the album he tells you the story of the music through his perspective. Amazing writer with an amazing ear for music.
I don't know, I just read his review of Rush's Snakes and Arrows Live and really enjoyed it. Heck, anybody who can mention King Crimson's Lark Tongue in Aspic in a review is cool by me! But I really can't say I've read too many of his other stuff.

I found this page while searching for Thom Jurek's e-mail so that I could point out to him that his review of Vince Gill's These Days expends nearly 400 words -- the entire splash page -- before he even mentions the album he's reviewing. I couldn't tell you whether I liked or disliked his review, because I got bored and surfed away before I ever got to the actual critique of the CD. In that, I didn't find the review helpful.
i fucking hate Thom Jurek! he's such a fucking lame writer. i found your post cause im so disgusted after just reading his crappy writing.
Hello Mr. Jurek.
Could you please review my album?
Its New-age genre:

Thanks,

I meant ofcourse Mr. J. West!
Something went wrong with the last post.
Sorry about that.
I find it interesting that so many people here spend time to rant about the worth, or lack thereof, of a music writer because they either disagree with the review or are left without a simple thumbs up or thumbs down. Maybe Jurek is off the mark at times, but at least he thinks about what he's listening to beyond "I like it" or "this sucks!" Isn’t that what music or art is supposed to inspire?
One thing's for sure, he seems to stir a lot of emotion in people who read his reviews. I guess you could say that in so doing he accomplished his job as a critic.
If it's the challenge of complex or disparate thought that bothers you, perhaps you should turn E! back on and open up your People magazine. I think Britney Spears is making a comeback.
Wow. Amazing. Incredible!
Your biggest argument why Thom Jurek is a bad writer is that he writes "too long" reviews.
Wow. That - really - is - a - bad - thing - indeed.
So, how old are you? 6 or 7? Have you finished you're ABC book by now?
"Mom, these reviews are too long!!!"
Whine whine whine.
I'm sorry, this post was probably too long for you. I'm sorry I made you cry.
And yes, it is, truly amazing, that when one person writes a review where he says that this'n'that recording is bad, another person might think that no no, this recording actually is a good recording. "You're so wrong!!! MOM!!!"
(Yes indeed, I too, disagree with Jurek's opinions some times. And Chappaqua is a good recording. Very worthwhile indeed, one could say.)
I have no problem with the fact that Thom writes long, rambling reviews. My only problem with him is that he's obviously in love with himself, and his reviews usually contain several glaring factual mistakes that anybody with google could have doublechecked in about two seconds. Also, Thom's face looks like it was shoved into the ass-end of a horse.
After reading your very long-winded post I can't even remember what your name is, but here goes...Hey Pop Musicology Blogger take down this memo, shut up!
AllMusic has two bigger problems that Thom Jurek: (1) inadequate IT resources, and (2) a refusal to make corrections. How many times have you clicked a link on on AllMusic.com waited and had the database query time out? Even more vexing is that they have a system for reporting errors in their database, but they never seem to make corrections. It's not a matter of distrust in the sources you offer up, they don't even correct their own internal inconsistencies.
More and more I've turned to Wikipedia as a first resource for a quick artist bio or discography. It's not always complete (but then neither is AllMusic.com), but the response time is snappy and I can actually fix any mistakes I find.
I agree. Jurek's articles really suck. I mean, why does he even bother when he clearly does not understand the music he is trying to write about. He's one of those guys who have earnt to reputation for all critics...
gosh, too right. I disagree with 90% of everything he says. The final straw was his review of pay The Devil by Van Morrison. It's possibly his worst album ever imho - but Jurek writes about five sides about how wonderful it all is. Sheesh
^^ nice blog!! ^@^

I looked up Thom Jurek after reading his review of Knowle West Boy and found it very informative. Sometimes a short review cannot emphasize what the music is about so I guess he makes long write-ups. It doesn't seem overly self-indulgent, sans the part where he starts dissecting the tracks one by one. And you can't have a critic agree with ya all the time, man. I agree with you for saying that you should be selective of the critics you read, so if you don't like a critic leave him alone. Don't memo him an insulting rant about how he does his job, lecturing how to do it better. It makes me reassess your age.
Truth is, you seem more irritating to me because you don't respect other person's opinions. Maybe the reason you hate him is that you find his taste in music opposing yours. But you are being so rude! The title of your post looks so desperate for a comment, so here, I'll give it to ya. Hope you enjoy and savour every bit of it. You deserve a title: 'Music critic' critic.
If ever Thom Jurek leaves AMG, you might take his post. Maybe that's what you want. It seems like you think you're on the higher level of human hierarchy. But why are you here on blogspot then?
Send me a hate letter. If you can. :)
Ciao.
pretty spot on. some of the responses - a little over the top.
